Week 3 Soror Spotlight #2 Soror Valerie Robinson

Our Second Soror for our week three Soror Spotlight is Soror Valerie Robinson. Soror Robinson has been with Eta Mu Zeta since 1992. She will be celebrating 40 years of Zeta Service this year!!!

Let's get to know Soror Robinson! When and where did you become a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated? May 3, 1980. I am a charter member of Mu Kappa at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Why did you choose Zeta? I was chosen. Brother DeVon George transferred to Indiana University of Pennsylvania. There were no Sigmas or Zetas. He got busy and chartered a Sigma chapter first. Less than a year later, he and the new brothers approached me along with four other women and asked us to become Zeta's. Brother George brought Zetas to the campus from the surrounding area and I was able to see the sisterhood in action. I found out that my Aunt had pledged Zeta, however she was an internal but she still loved the sorority. She encouraged me to accept the invitation. Joining Zeta is one of the best decisions that I have made. Where did you go to school? What is your major? My degree is in Computer Science from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Who was the International President when you were initiated?

Dr. Edith V. Francis

What is your profession? My profession is Information Technology. For the majority of my career, I specialized in Storage and Data Protection. I started at the entry level and worked my way up to a Manager and Storage Architect. Last June, I accepted the Infrastructure and Operations Senior Manager position at the Department of Fish and Wildlife. What is a fond Zeta Memory? When my cousin became a Zeta at Howard University. We grew up together and were like sisters. We share a true sister bond. What are some of your Hobbies and Interest? I am an avid knitter. My plan is to become a knitwear designer when I retire. I also took up the piano. All I have to say is I have the desire and perseverance to play the piano but I am waiting for the skill and talent to arrive. What Positions have you held in Zeta on any level? President, 1st Vice President, Treasurer, Financial Secretary, Secretary, State Treasurer, State Financial Secretary, State Secretary.

Please share a quote, passage, or bible verse that resonates with you. "When people show you who they are, believe them the first time." - Maya Angelou (I add to this - It is a huge gift when people show you who they are. You don't have to work to figure it out.) What Zeta Principle do you most relate to and why? Scholarship and Service. My grandmothers taught me that what you learn can never be taken away from you no matter what happens in your life. They also showed me to be a lifelong student and to always be curious and learn. I grew up in a family that always helped when they could. My grandmothers were both very involved. They held offices, ran committees, engaged in politics, were very active in the church. Giving back is part of who I am.
