This Week We have two Sorors to Spotlight. Our First Soror Spotlight is Soror Rhonda Lee. Soror Lee is a new addition to our chapter, having returned to active status this year.
Let's get to know Soror Lee!
When and where did you become a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated?
November 11, 1995. I was a member of Epsilon Mu at Kansas State University.
Why did you choose Zeta?
Two of my favorite aunts are Zetas. My Aunt Ruth was State Director of Nebraska and was always active in Zeta and in various other ways as well. I have almost all of the NPHC interwoven throughout my immediate and extended family-- my dad was a very active Kappa from way back. However, when it came down to my selection, I felt that Zeta spoke to my sense of common decency.
Zeta women represent unobtrusive class and refinement, like a pearl. Yet we are highly respected because we are prone to getting into the “good trouble” Frater John Lewis spoke of, for the betterment of Black people. Zeta’s founding cornerstones of being devoted to education also resonated with me. The connection to Phi Beta Sigma felt right. There are never any doubts as to who our Fraters are. My younger brother became a Sigma at Morehouse College because I was a Zeta. There is truth to truly being in the Blue and White Family
Where did you go to school? What is your major?
Kansas State University What is your major? BA in Journalism Mass Communication in the Electronic Media and American Ethnic Studies. I later attended Mississippi State University where I attained my certificate for Broadcast Meteorology/GeoSciences
Who was the International President when you were initiated?
Dr. Jylla Moore Foster Tearte
What is your profession?
By trade I am a TV Meteorologist, but I also have a background in public relations. Are you still actively working? Yes. If not are you retired? I wish.
What is a fond Zeta Memory?
Growing up in the Midwest Heartland, the opportunities to road trip in college were abundant since everything is so spread out. I have never been in a step show as one who steps (lol!), but I was a masterful cane, prop or garment picker-upper and honed my skills on different stages tornado alley-wide.
What are some of your Hobbies and Interest?
I love running. I am an avid marathon/half marathon runner. I am also always ready to travel to anywhere in the world. I have three more continents to go, and I was going to hit Africa this summer before COVID-19 changed my plans. I have only two more states to visit too. I would like to get to Minnesota and North Dakota before the year ends. If North Dakota is your last state, they have a special shirt for you. I want that shirt!
What Positions have you held in Zeta on any level?
I was State Parlimentarian in Kansas, I also used to be a writer for the Archon, back when there were paper editions. I have been an Advisor for the Zetas on the campus of Virginia State University.
Please share a quote, passage, or bible verse that resonates with you.
My all-time favorite quote is, “Even if you are on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.”—Will Rogers
What Zeta Principle do you most relate to and why?
I equally subscribe to scholarship and service, because I believe that they go hand-in-hand. Knowledge is key to maintaining and strengthening any civilization. This is why slaves were denied the right. When you have the education to lift yourself and others out of oppression, you are using your education for the betterment of your people thus providing an ongoing service for and to humanity.
